Justin Hughes-Coleman hails from San Diego, California. He graduated from California State University in San Marcos with a bachelor’s degree in Economics. Justin had more or less spent his entire youth dreaming of going off somewhere across the world. The opportunity came to him in the form of teaching English in Madrid, Spain at Ceip Antonio Osuna, a public school in Madrid. There, not only was he able to improve his Spanish, but he also was able to explore a completely new culture and build bonds with his students and colleagues. Justin is undeniably a great example of it never being too late to go on an adventure!
Justin and Leesa, the founder of Dreams Abroad, met in the summer of 2016. They were both about to start teaching in Madrid for the first time. Justin was an original member of the Dreams Abroad team. He helped lay the foundation for the community we have today. His articles inspire us all and provide real insights on issues like racism in Europe.
Adventure into the Future
Becoming an English teacher was just one the of jobs Justin had, such as jobs in retail, real estate, and finance. Currently, Justin is studying to pursue a career in data science. Teaching abroad allowed Justin to realize how much he unquestionably valued the freedom of traveling. Justin realized that he wanted a more flexible career where he could travel as much as he wanted. A career in data science would not only be flexible but would also align with Justin’s other interests. With this purpose in mind, Justin has spent his time in the United States honing his skills as a web developer and preparing for his long-term goals.
In this video, Justin talks about what he learned through working within the Dreams Abroad community. Traveling abroad and regularly interacting with the Dreams Abroad team allowed Justin to discover a new self-confidence that he certainly didn’t know he had. Check it out!
